West Maui is steeped in history, with Lahaina established as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom by King Kamehameha in 1802. It remained the center of government for more than fifty years before the capital was relocated to Honolulu for its larger harbor. Over 80% of Lahaina was destroyed by wildfire in 2023. The community is in the process of healing and rebuilding.
To the south of Lahaina, you'll find the residential communities of Launiupoko and Olowalu, which are comprised largely of agriculturally zoned parcels. To the north of Lahaina, are the popular resorts of Kaanapali and Kapalua, with Honokowai, Mahinahina, Kahana and Napili between.
