In the 70’s Makena was little more than ranch land, with cattle, cactus, and a dirt road. Back then, Makena was a remote destination that took time to get to. Now, the roads are paved, and access to Makena’s beaches and natural beauty is much easier.
Makena Beaches
Makena Beach State Park is home to its most famous beaches, “Big Beach” and “Little Beach”. Other popular beaches are Po’olenelena Beach, Chang’s Beach, Maluaka Beach, Pa’ako Cove, and Makena Landing Park. Beyond Makena is Keone’ōio Bay and the Ahihi Kinau Natural Area Reserve, which is home to many archaeological sites, native plants and marine life.

Makena Golf & Tennis
Makena’s home to a members only golf club at the Makena Golf & Beach Club. Members are fans of the comfort station, which provides snacks and beverages midway through the course. In addition to the 18 Hole North Course, you’ll find tennis gardens and pickleball courts. After a round of golf or a match on the courts, members can enjoy Makena’s spa or relax by the pool.
Makena Restaurants
Aside from the restaurants at the Makena Golf & Beach Club, there aren’t really any formal dining spots. Closer to Makena’s State Park, you’ll often find one or two food trucks, like Jawz Taco Truck and Sandy’s Beach Kitchen.
