Holiday Giving: Ways to help survivors of the Maui fires celebrate the holidays

Giving Opportunities: Ways to help survivors of the Maui fires to celebrate the Holidays

In the wake of the devastating wildfires that swept Maui County on August 8, 2023 and destroyed the historic town of Lahaina as well as parts of Upcountry Maui, many of you have asked how you can help survivors.

Aid has poured in from around the world to many charitable organizations that have focused on housing and getting survivors necessities for daily living. These organizations will need your support for years to come. Read Ways to Give

As the holidays approach, several Maui organizations are stepping up to help bring holiday cheer to our Maui residents who have lost everything. Here are a few ways to give:

Makana no nā Keiki: Be an Elf, Give with Aloha

From Makana no nā Keiki: We are "a grass roots movement aiming to connect children and families that were impacted by the August 8th Maui wildfires of Lahaina & Kula with caring people that want to help rejuvenate their spirits. Our goal is to grant Keiki Christmas wishes. We will distribute all gifts during a day of celebration for the whole family on December 16th, 2023 at Maui Nui Botanical Gardens.

We have registered over 800 affected keiki and their actual wishes. Browse through their photos and stories, learn about their favorites. When you find one you want to gift, remember their number, click on the "Shop for Me" link below their photo and you will be brought directly to Amazon."

You can meet the Keiki, see their wish list and shop for them, or make a donation and Makana no nā Keiki will shop for the items and distribute items.

All donations are tax deductible, FEIN 45-5263880, www.LivingPonoProject.org

Holidays for Lahaina: Thanksgiving Meals

Holidays for Lahaina is a local, grassroots, Lahaina based 501(c)(3) non-profit that's working hard to ensure nobody goes without a Thanksgiving feast. They are taking donations and coordinating volunteers to put together meal kits and provide meals in partnership with local restaurants.

From Holidays for Lahaina: "We've curated a Thanksgiving meal kit that encapsulates the flavors and traditions of this beloved holiday. With the help of Costco streamlining the shipping logistics and purchasing process, they've enabled us to seamlessly buy everything needed for a complete Thanksgiving meal. This kit is tailored to meet the needs of Lahaina wildfire victims, ensuring that every family has the opportunity to create cherished memories and share a delightful meal together, despite the challenges they face.

Our partnership with T.S. Restaurants and Maui Brewing Co. brings the essence of aloha to life through expertly prepared hot Thanksgiving meals. They have graciously offered to provide us with Thanksgiving meals at cost, allowing us to stretch every dollar to make a greater impact. Together, we're committed to providing a comforting, chef-prepared Thanksgiving feast for those who may not have a functional kitchen or prefer the convenience of a ready-to-enjoy meal."

In the Wake of the Maui Fires Here are Ways to Give

Support for our Ohana and the Maui Community

Updated 9/6/23

Maui has been a place where many of you have celebrated love. You have made the memories of a lifetime on this beautiful island. Many of you have celebrated some of the most important moments of your lives here engagements, marriages, anniversaries, birthdays, and family vacations. For residents, it is our home and we cherish the land and the people of Hawaii. It is where we live. Children are born here, families grow, and our ancestors rest here.

The people of Maui need your support. The fires have affected West Maui, Upcountry, and South Maui. People have lost their homes and their loved ones. Please give however you can. Any donation, no matter how small, matters at this time. Your support will be needed for years to come as the people of Maui grieve, come together to determine a path forward and rebuild.

To give directly to survivors

Help Maui Risehttps://www.helpmauirise.org/This fund originated out of a strong desire to give directly to the people who were affected and lost their homes and businesses. While Venmo was the quickest way to get these donations to people, Help Maui Rise has worked with GoFundMe.org which is a non-profit 501c3. Help Maui Rise has vetted each family and you can read about each story by clicking on Help Maui Rise. Per the organization via Instagram: "All donations made to the "one click donation" help Maui Rise x GoFundMe.org collective hub in the US are tax-deductible. GoFundMe.org is a non profit (501c3). Therefore, donations made to any fundraiser in which GoFundMe.org is the beneficiary or organizer are tax deductible in the US. Donation receipts are automatically emailed to donors upon completion of their "one click donation" on the GoFundMe platform. Donations made to individual GoFundMe campaigns are not tax-deductible unless they benefit another charity."

People's Fund of Mauihttps://www.eifoundation.org/peoples-fund-of-maui/This fund gained notoriety when formed and endorsed by celebrities Oprah and The Rock. Per the fund's website, payments of $1200/mo are dispersed directly to adults that were displaced by the wildfires in Kula and Lahaina, and funds will be dispersed "every 30 days as long as members of our community are still in need and as long as the funds last"

Maui PrepMaui Prep is taking students that were displaced by the fire. You can sponsor a student here:https://www.mauiprep.org/giving

Maui Fire Housing: How to give housing and for those in need of housing

Maui Fire Housing Resources

The Hawaii Housing Department is now taking applications for housing. The link takes you to a page for those who HAVE or NEED a home. See below.

Hawaii Housing Department Program Link:

https://dbedt.hawaii.gov/hhfdc/hawaiCABBi-fire-relief-housing-program/

For Property Owners and Landlords:

Offer your home or available housing unit using this form. An HHFDC representative will then contact you to confirm and verify your information.

For Displaced Residents in Need of Housing:

If you have been displaced or have been left houseless as a result of the wildfires, please fill out this form. An HHFDC representative will then contact you to confirm and verify your information and try to connect you with the landlord of an available unit that meets your needs.

Realtor's Association of Maui

In collaboration with Hawai‘i’s REALTOR® Associations and Hawaii Information Service, the Realtor's Association of Maui launched MauiKokua.com, a new website to offer housing resources and connect those who have housing with those who need it. They’re also forming a series of committees to help with the phased recovery of our communities.

AirBNB--Temporary Housing

Airbnb.org will be working with organizations on the ground (like https://www.meoinc.org/) to do the intake from survivors and verify their need

Once verified, Airbnb.org handle the booking in person w/ the survivors to get them booked into a home.

The benefit of working for Airbnb.org for those who want to host is Airbnb.org will handle the booking process (they will receive booking requests via email/Airbnb platform). Airbnb will provide insurance during the stay through its Aircover program ($1M in liabilty coverage; $3M in property coverage)

AirBNB has housed over 250,000 people to date through Airbnb.org, including 100,000+ from those fleeing Ukraine.

FEMA

Residents of Maui County who have been affected by this tragedy should register for FEMA assistance. Survivors with internet or telephone access can register for assistance by visiting www.DisasterAssistance.gov, calling 1-800-621- 3362 or by using the FEMA App (FEMA.gov/app).

If you use a relay service, such as video relay (VRS), captioned telephone or other service, give FEMA the number for that service.
