To kick off the holiday season and celebrate its 30th anniversary, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua is proud to host a special Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony on Friday, Dec. 2 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Guests will be delighted by the resort’s handcrafted gingerbread house and Santa’s grand arrival, then enjoy live music by Hawaiian legend Henry Kapono, keiki hula dancing, photos with Santa, a holiday craft fair, and the much-anticipated lighting of the trees.

“We are thrilled to welcome in the festive season and celebrate our milestone 30th anniversary with our guests, families, and local community,” said Andrew Rogers, general manager of The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua. “It’s an honor to create this magical Kapalua experience where we can gather and create cherished lifelong memories.”

Sweet treats throughout the evening will include hot cocoa, cider, and cookies. Local television personality Billy V will help emcee the event along with Clifford Naeʻole, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua’s longtime Hawaiian cultural advisor.

During the Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony, the resort is providing an opportunity for residents and visitors to give back to the community by collecting donations of non-perishable foods for Maui Food Bank and keiki clothing, baby supplies, diapers, slippers and sneakers of any size, school supplies, and gift cards for the children of the Ka Hale A Ke Ola Homeless Resource Center. Donation bins will be available all evening. A portion of the proceeds from the holiday craft fair will benefit Ka Hale A Ke Ola.

The Montage Kapalua Bay is introducing a new Luau to its offerings at the Beach Club at Kapalua Bay (one of my favorite locations on the island, the Beach Club is located overlooking Kapalua Bay).

Unlike most public luaus in Hawaii, The Beach Club Luau at Kapalua Bay will be an intimate affair, providing guests with a more personal and authentic Hawaiian luau experience. The up-close event will only host up to 40 people. While guests at The Beach Club Luau will still sit at communal tables, its small size will afford all guests a front row seat.

Each guest will receive coursed gourmet luau bento boxes, curated by Executive Chef Eric Faivre filled with modern luau favorites. For more information, click here.

Held on Tuesdays. For reservations, please call (808) 662-6627 or click here to email.

The Plantation Course: an Update on Maui's Premier Golf Course

Photo: Kapalua Golf, From L- to R - Mark Rolfing, Clifford Nae'ole, Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore at the Plantation Course

Kapalua's famed Plantation Course is home to the PGA TOUR's Sentry Tournament of Champions, an invitation-only tournament featuring an elite field of tour winners from the year before. Consistently ranked as the 1 golf course in Hawaii, with numerous awards and accolades, playing the Plantation is a must for golfers visiting Maui.

It has been said that the course has become easier over the years for the pros, yet harder for the recreational user. The course closed early in 2019, for an extensive refinement project with the assistance of one of the original designers, Ben Crenshaw, along with Troon's Design Development and Agronomy team, and long-time Maui resident and Golf Channel personality, Mark Rolfing.

Crews are making quick progress on this extensive refinement project. As of June, all bunker shaping and drainage has been completed and all greens have been final shaped. The entire course, all 100 acres, have been sprigged with Celebration Bermudagrass and 14 greens have been grassed with TifEagle Bermudagrass. The remaining four greens will be grassed the week of June 24th.

The Kapalua Golf team is planning on a soft opening in November with the course in pristine condition by The Sentry Tournament of Champions. In this video, Mark Rolfing discusses plans for refining the golf course to create a better playing experience for the recreational golfer as well as create a fun and interesting experience for the pros. Watch it to learn more about what the designers of the course have in mind...plus, there's some great aerial footage of Kapalua

The Montage Kapalua Bay, is a five-star resort with private residences, situated overlooking Kapalua Bay. The grounds are home to one of my favorite spots on the whole island, the Cliff House. When I was growing up, I would accompany my father to meetings there. In spite of being bored at the meetings, the journey always thrilled me, because I knew we would be swimming in the crystal clear waters below as soon as he finished.

The Cliff House is usually only available for private rental, so this pop-up bar and lounge provides one of the best vantage points to view Maui's spectacular sunsets. Enjoy light bites with specialty cocktails and tasting flights of Veuve Clicquot Champagnes, the signature Yellow Label, Riche Rosé and La Grande Dame.

PLAY & LIVE: Kapalua's Plantation Course

PLAY the Plantation Course

In just a few days, Kapalua will welcome golf's greatest players for the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions.

While the golf's superheroes will play the course from January 3-7, 2018, the Plantation Course is open to mere mortals to play as well.

Both the Plantation Course and the much loved Kapalua Bay Course are open to the public. Managed by Troon Golf, reservations to play the courses can be booked by calling 808-669-8044 or 877-527-2582.

Tomorrow, Friday, December 29, 2017 is last day of play for the course prior to the tournament, with limited tee times from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The course closes to then prepare for the tournament, reopening to the public Monday, January 8, 2018. The course is projected to partially reopen for play late that morning, pending an extended finish for the tournament.

LIVE overlooking the Plantation Course

For those that don't just want to Play here on Maui, but would like to call Kapalua home, there are options to either purchase an existing home or build on one of the few remaining lots overlooking the Plantation Course in Kapalua's Plantation Estates. The Plantation Estates was developed in two phases: Phase I, which was comprised of 36 home sites, with 2 additional home sites added later; and Phase II, which was comprised of 14 home sites situated along the 16th fairway of the course. A separate parcel of 80 acres that was originally part of this phase, was sold with the provision it could be further subdivided into 8 parcels. It is situated overlooking the 5th fairway.

600 Honokohau, the last remaining home site in Plantation Estates Phase II

At the time of this post, there are 7 homes for sale, ranging from $4,200,000 to $15,000,000, with all built between 2001 to 2008. Each home varies in terms of style of construction, views, and finishes, and some have ohanas (cottages of no more than 1000 sq. ft.). Fun fact: 229 Plantation Club Drive is owned by Jim Furyk, who won the Mercedes Tournament of Champions in 2001.

Plantation Estates Lots for Sale

At the time of this post, there are currently 6 home sites for sale at the Plantation Estates. Prices vary depending largely upon view and location, though other factors such as site work, orientation toward the sunset, wind exposure, and owner motivation play a factor in pricing as well. For many, while it takes more effort and time to build, building allows for a newer home, customized floor plan, and more modern features.

NEW TITLE SPONSOR FOR KAPALUA'S PGA TOUR TOURNAMENT OF CHAMPIONS AND PRO-AM INFORMATION

Sentry Insurance has signed a five year agreement as title sponsor for the PGA TOUR's premier event, the invitation only Tournament of Champions.

Golf's brightest and best flock to Maui each year for this winner's only tournament. The defending champion is Justin Thomas (2017). Past winners include Jordan Spieth (2016); Patrick Reed (2015); Zach Johnson (2014); and Dustin Johnson (2013).

The prestigious tournament dates back to to 1953, starting at Las Vegas’ Desert Inn Country Club, as an event for winners from the previous season. After moving from Las Vegas to California for thirty years, it finally settled at home in the Kapalua Resort on Maui

The new Sentry TOC will be held January 3-7, 2018 at the famed Plantation Course. For golf fans, there are a limited number of Pro Am spots available. The Pro Am includes one entry in the 18th hole All Amateur Tournament at the Bay Course, the Pro-Am Draw Party, one entry in the 18-hole Pro-Am Tournament (team competition, 3 amateurs with a professional), VIP valet parking on Wednesday, January 3 for the Pro-Am, Pro-Am Hospitality for two on Wednesday, an Invitation for two to the Awards Reception, as well as access for two to private skybox seating on the 18th green of The Plantation Course for the TOC. Read More About the Sentry TOC Pro-Am Opportunities: Sentry Pro Am Info

Surrounded by the communities of the Plantation Estates, Honolua Ridge and the new Mahana Estates with views of the Pacific and outer islands of Molokai and Lanai, the Plantation Course is one of Maui's most spectacular golf courses. Held during Maui's whale season, it is not uncommon to watch players with humpback whales breaching in the background.

Hōkūleʻa returns to Kapalua, Maui

The Hōkūleʻa returns to Kapalua, Maui

After three years of sailing around the world, the Hōkūleʻa is returning to Honolua Bay, Maui.

Back on May 1, 1976, the Hōkūleʻa set off from Honolua Bay on it's inaugural sail to chart the course to Tahiti. I was fortunate enough to be there, along with my father, Duke, to witness their departure for, what was to be, an historic voyage and the beginning of a movement to Mālama Honua, or care for our island earth.

Now, some 41 years later, the Hōkūleʻa has returned to Honolua Bay on the Mahalo, Hawai'i Sail. The Polynesian Voyaging Society (PVS) has announced that this will be a six month journey throughout the Hawaiian Islands, with the first stop being Honolua Bay, Maui

Events:

Today as the canoe made her way to Maui, dozens gathered aboard the Hōkūleʻa to announce Olowalu reef as a Mission Blue “Hope Spot”, by world-renowned oceanographer Dr. Sylvia Earle. The Mission Blue Coalition named the Olowalu reef, which extends nearly 1000 acres off and four miles along, West Maui's shore, as a Hope Spot to recognize and support the community group Olowalu Community Managed Makai Area’s (CMMA’s) efforts to protect this fragile ecosystem.

In addition to daytime educational activities, which include the welcoming ceremony, tree planting, and canoe tours on Saturday and Sunday, there are several "talk story" events. These evening events are open to the public, to listen to the crew talk story about their voyages over the last four decades, the lessons they have learned, and their mission to circle the world with a "lei of hope".
