Local Maui Artist Ronaldo Macedo signs prints of &quot;I will always remember you this way&quot;, winner of the 2024 Remembering Lahaina Poster Contest.


&quot;The Lahaina Restoration Foundation is a 501(c)3 Hawai‘i nonprofit organization chartered in 1962. Its mission is to be stewards and storytellers of Lahaina’s Historic &amp; Cultural Heritage. We envision a community that engages with us in preserving and protecting Lahaina’s Hawaiian &amp; Historic Sense of Place.LRF has restored and preserved more than one dozen landmarks and historic structures in Lahaina. LRF maintains several collections of artifacts, photographs, manuscripts, maps, logs and other materials representative of Lahaina’s colorful past. These collections are available to the public and researchers by request.&quot; --LahainaRestoration.org


The LRF holds a special place in my heart.  The foundation was chartered in 1967.  My mother had just graduated with a Masters in Fine Art from the University of Hawaii and moved to Maui and found a job with the Lahaina Restoration Foundation.  She lived upstairs at the Baldwin House on historic Front Street, and spent her days restoring the Carthaginian, a floating museum.  She met and married my father and they started their marriage in a plantation house off Wainee Street.  Eventually, they moved Upcountry to Makawao, and started a nursery and landscaping business.  The Carthaginian was later replaced in 1973 by the Carhaginian II, which was sunk in 2005 to create an artificial reef.  My mother started painting again in her seventies and most of her compositions featured homes and plants around Lahaina.


Moving forward the LRF holds much of the history of Lahaina in its digital records and is working to recover some of the artifacts that were damaged in the fire. There's a chance that some can be saved and refurbished to maintain a part of our history.
