PLAY & LIVE: Kapalua's Plantation Course

PLAY the Plantation Course

In just a few days, Kapalua will welcome golf's greatest players for the PGA Tour's Sentry Tournament of Champions.

While the golf's superheroes will play the course from January 3-7, 2018, the Plantation Course is open to mere mortals to play as well.

Both the Plantation Course and the much loved Kapalua Bay Course are open to the public. Managed by Troon Golf, reservations to play the courses can be booked by calling 808-669-8044 or 877-527-2582.

Tomorrow, Friday, December 29, 2017 is last day of play for the course prior to the tournament, with limited tee times from 7 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The course closes to then prepare for the tournament, reopening to the public Monday, January 8, 2018. The course is projected to partially reopen for play late that morning, pending an extended finish for the tournament.

LIVE overlooking the Plantation Course

For those that don't just want to Play here on Maui, but would like to call Kapalua home, there are options to either purchase an existing home or build on one of the few remaining lots overlooking the Plantation Course in Kapalua's Plantation Estates. The Plantation Estates was developed in two phases: Phase I, which was comprised of 36 home sites, with 2 additional home sites added later; and Phase II, which was comprised of 14 home sites situated along the 16th fairway of the course. A separate parcel of 80 acres that was originally part of this phase, was sold with the provision it could be further subdivided into 8 parcels. It is situated overlooking the 5th fairway.

At the time of this post, there are 7 homes for sale, ranging from $4,200,000 to $15,000,000, with all built between 2001 to 2008. Each home varies in terms of style of construction, views, and finishes, and some have ohanas (cottages of no more than 1000 sq. ft.). Fun fact: 229 Plantation Club Drive is owned by Jim Furyk, who won the Mercedes Tournament of Champions in 2001.

Plantation Estates Lots for Sale

At the time of this post, there are currently 6 home sites for sale at the Plantation Estates. Prices vary depending largely upon view and location, though other factors such as site work, orientation toward the sunset, wind exposure, and owner motivation play a factor in pricing as well. For many, while it takes more effort and time to build, building allows for a newer home, customized floor plan, and more modern features.

The gated community of the Kapalua Bay Villas is situated overlooking Oneloa Bay, with direct access to the white sand beach. The Montage Residences Kapalua Bay and the Spa Montage are the neighboring properties to the south.

Bay Villas amenities include central air conditioning (not in all units but may be installed), three swimming pools, BBQ areas and tennis courts. You'll find a mix of one and two bedroom floor plans in this popular oceanfront community. Short term rentals are allowed.

We are seeing an upward trend in the Kapalua Bay Villas activity. It is not uncommon to see new listings come on in November and December, to take advantage of our busy season. In 2017, we saw a positive increase in sales at the Bay Villas. While the Kapalua Golf Villas also saw a positive increase in the number of sales, the average sales price was down (read Kapalua Golf Villas Market Update). At the Bay Villas the average sales price was slightly higher than last year. The Ridge Villas saw the fewest sales in 2017.

The Sentry TOC: LIVE where the Champions Play

The Sentry Tournament of Champions: The Plantation Course, Kapalua, Maui January 3-7, 2018

Each year, Maui welcomes the PGA Tour's best players in an invitation only Tournament of Champions. This year, the field includes a mix of familiar and new faces to the Plantation Course.

The Sentry TOC opens the calendar year for the PGA Tour on one of Hawaii's most picturesque and challenging courses. Past winners who have qualified for this year's field include Justin Thomas, Jordan Speith, and Dustin Johnson. While the field won't be announced until December 29th, many are looking forward to watching newcomers such as Xander Schauffele, Rookie of the Year, Cam Smith, and Kevin Kisner take on the challenge of the TOC.

Since 1999, the host organizations of the Tournament of Champions have donated nearly $6 million to a variety of Maui Community Charities--ranging from youth programs, elder care and conservation efforts.

While a challenging walk, if on Maui, it's well worth attending the TOC to walk along the course, watch your favorite players, and take in the beauty of the Kapalua Resort. It's not uncommon to see the cameras cut away from play to show a whale breaching off shore.

Consistently ranked the 1 Course in Hawaii (Golfweek), the Plantation Course is a favorite of professionals and amateurs alike. Designed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore, the course and its surrounding homes have some of the most spectacular views in all of Kapalua. The vantage points along the 16th and 17th holes, the highest elevation of the course, are particularly awe inspiring.

The view from 600 Honokohau, Plantation Estates Phase II, Kapalua, Maui

The homes in the Plantation Estates positioned along the 16th, 17th and 18th holes have commanded some of the highest prices in Kapalua, with sales ranging from $7-14,000,000. The last two vacant lots to sell on the 18th closed at $2,750,000 and $4,500,000.

There are now just three undeveloped home sites remaining along this highly valued stretch of the Plantation Course, with two currently offered for sale:

600 Honokohau (pictured above) offered at $2,800,000

220 Plantation Club Drive offered at $4,495,000.

600 Honokohau is a rare offering. Perfectly situated with a South West orientation, this two acre vacant lot commands panoramic ocean, island and sunset views. At night, the lights of the resort sparkle on the coastline. The gated community offers privacy and this end location has only one neighbor. A level terrain adds to its desirability. The value lies in the location, view, the orientation (a southwest orientation is ideal as it takes in the sunset and the prevailing trade winds come from the north east) and topography.

Currently home offerings in the Plantation Estates range from $4,200,000 to $15,000,000. For more information on homes and lots in the Plantation Estates and to set up a private showing of any of these offerings, please contact Courtney.

Shopping in Paia's Boutiques: Unique Gifts from Maui

Shopping in Paia, Maui: a few of my favorite boutiques

Some of my favorite shopping is in the colorful beach town of Paia on Maui's North Shore, and I found myself there this past week picking up a few gifts. (I have to confess, it's not just for the holidays, but year round too.)

Over the years, the sleepy town on the way to Hana has ben transformed and is now home to a variety of restaurants, boutiques, and one of my favorite local markets, Mana Foods (confession: I usually just buy chocolate there). For those of you on island looking to pick up a gift you can't find everywhere, strolling along Hana Highway and up Baldwin Avenue can be a great way to spend the day. If you prefer to do your shopping for Hawaii inspired gifts, I've included website links when available, and instagram links so you can drool.

Nuage Bleu

This is always my first stop in Paia. This charming boutique carries clothing you'd be hard pressed to find anywhere else on the island, the cutest kiddie corner, housewares, and several of my favorite local jewelers: Hula Hoops, Free to be Me Jewelry and Ella May. Warning: I have to stay away from the jewelry counter every time I go in there.Nuage Bleu's website | Nuage Bleu on Instagram

Biasa Rose

My next stop is usually Biasa Rose. They've been a staple in Paia since 1991. Known for their funny plates and towels, sweet handmade cards from a local letterpress artisan, jewelry, clothes and shoes. This is where I found Meli Wraps--locally made reusable cotton and beeswax to replace plastic wrap.Biasa Roses's website | Biasa Rose on Instagram

Sea La Vie

Brand New to Paia is Sea La Vie. Owned by the same owner as Biasa Rose, I found myself walking out with candles, cards, ornaments (it is that time of the year, after all). The store has a hip, beachy vibe, as well as a coffee bar in the back, for those who may want to sip while others shop. They are so new their website and instagram aren't up yet, so you'll just have to go in person for now.

Lilikoi

I find myself consistently drawn to their line of pearl wraps by Fafa Loha (re-reading this, I think I may have a jewelry problem). They can be worn as bracelets or necklaces, and customized for length or to add more pearls (what girl doesn't want that?). Prices range from $39-849. Lilikoi also carries beauty products, and I don't know where else on Maui I'd be able to get my Spiritual Gangster or Good HYOUman gear.Lilikoi on instagram

Lele

My last stop was Lele, which I hadn't had the chance to visit before in their new location. While there I met Rachel, the owner, who named the store after her daughter. She makes all of the jewelry herself and specializes in wrapping with gemstones like black diamonds. I found several gifts, including turkish towels, pillows, and painted cutting boards. I left wishing it was cold enough in Kapalua to wear the imported wraps from Italy.Lele on instagram

Those are just a few of my favorites...you can find more boutiques, shops, restaurants and links to their sites on the website for the Paia Town Association.

Introducing Kapalua Golf Villa 11T3-4: Overlooking Kapalua's Bay Course

This lovely condominium residence sits overlooking the 10th and 18th holes of the Kapalua Bay Course. Oriented toward the West, the spacious lanai is perfected situated for watching the golfers come in, taking in the ocean, and watching Maui's spectacular sunsets.

Located on the entry level, this single level floor plan offers one bedroom, two baths, and a naturally lit flex room that is large enough for a twin bed or for an office. The Golf Villas amenities include central air conditioning, a covered carport, four swimming pools, and BBQ areas. Building 11 enjoys a private location, yet is close to Pineapple Grill, the Bay Course Clubhouse and the walking trails. Short term rentals are allowed.

The quiet enclave of Kapalua Place is comprised of eight lots overlooking the white sandy beach of Oneloa Bay toward Molokai. The gated community was developed in 1989, with spacious homesites ranging from just over a half acre to 1.7 acres.

At the time of this post, there are four offerings at Kapalua Place, one homesite and three homes--all are beachfront. Additionally, the oceanfront home at Alaelae Peninsula is offered for sale. View Kapalua Place Homes and Lots for Sale

Similar to Kapalua, there are just six beachfront homesites in the Kaanapali Resort. The small Kai Ala Place community is nestled along one of my favorite sandy beaches, Kekaa Beach, just north of the Sheraton. Four of the homesites are developed. There are just two offerings in this community, a homesite and a home. View Kaanapali Oceanfront Homes and Lots for Sale

The only home to sell at Kai Ala Place is 20 Kai Ala Place which closed in 2002 for $9,750,000. At over 11,000 sq. ft., it is a substantial home, so the sales price/sq. ft. was $880.
